Learning to deal with it is vital for our long-term health. While stress alone doesn't cause disease, it triggers molecular changes throughout the body that make us more susceptible to many illnesses. In this course, students will gain an understanding of the importance of how to deal with both positive and negative stress in their lives. Students will evaluate models for effective transition planning, assessment and evaluation; transition planning across settings and environments; and understanding differing perspectives on transitions within and across environments. In addition, students will learn about developing collaborative relationships with parents and professionals; understanding transition practices and relevant legislation; and practise gathering information when using transition assessment and evaluation tools. BESc 1007 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Trauma-Informed Perspectives for Health Care Professionals This course will provide a trauma-informed perspective on the history, assessment, treatment, and theories of traumatic stress and its impacts on children, adults, and families. Students will be introduced to up-to-date research on traumatic stress. The development of the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress and associated disorders such as acute stress, depression, and generalized anxiety will be examined in light of recent and historical research on the topic. Areas of focus will include: diagnostic criteria, assessment, review of current theories of trauma (biological, developmental, psycho-social, and psychological), clinical intervention skills, and treatment modalities. cYWK 3020 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Treating Challenging Behaviours Students will be introduced to a variety of procedures used to assess and treat challenging behaviours presented by individuals with autism/Autism Spectrum Disorder. In addition, functional behavioural assessment and functional analysis and scientifically validated techniques for the treatment of challenging behaviours will be compared. Emphasis will be placed on ethical considerations such as the utilization of the least intrusive, least restrictive model and effective treatment. The focus will be on victims of residential break and enter, children and trauma, victims of crime such as: those sexually assaulted, elders, and victims of hate crimes. There will be a special emphasis on the secondary victimization of friends, relatives, witnesses, first responders (police, firefighters, paramedics), health-care professionals, childcare and social service workers and the clergy. cYWK 3022 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Working with Families and Teams This course presents the student with theories, terminology and applications underlying current approaches to teamwork and working with the families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The focus will be on effective collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, which is essential to successful intensive behavioural intervention (IBI). Students will develop the interpersonal, job-oriented skills necessary to problem-solve as team members in a flexible, empathetic, resourceful, and productive manner. COMPuTER AND INFORMATION TEChNOLOGY COuRSES Database Development using Oracle OL This course examines Relational Database Design, Application Development and Implementation in detail. It also exposes the students to the different tools available for querying, manipulating, and reporting information from databases for any web-based application.
