Students develop theoretical and practical communication skills by investigating the power of visual imagery. Virtual Communication Navigating virtual environments requires evolving communication skills. Students investigate virtual communities in terms of privacy and boundaries, and other influences on personal and professional lives. Work Environment Communications In the workplace, employers require high standards of communication skills and sensitivity to diverse audiences. In this course, students develop their skills by composing workplace messages, incorporating technology and considering the environment. Personal and societal trends relating to the concepts of play, recreation, leisure and wellness will be discussed within a framework of developing quality recreational experiences for persons with special needs. COMMuNICATIONS COuRSES (CONT.) OL Adaptive Computer Technology in Education This course will continue to build on the use of educational software with the knowledge of adaptive software and devices used within the school setting. This will enable Educational Assistants to increase their skill and ability to assist special needs children. The student will have the opportunity to become familiar with adaptive computer technology, both hardware and software and how they can be implemented to work in a classroom. NOTE: The student must have adequate computer skills (e.g. word processing, internet search) to be successful in this course. HUMN 1014 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Applied Behavioural Analysis Introduction This course introduces the student to the principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA), which is the basis for Intensive Behavioural Interventions (IBI). In addition to basic terminology, students will learn when and how to use these techniques appropriately. Students will also learn how to access and interpret journal publications in the field of autism and applied behaviour analysis. BESc 1000 | 56 hrs $506 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Autism Spectrum Disorder – Assisting Student Development A comprehensive examination of the Autism Spectrum Disorder, this course will provide educational staff with the tools they need to work successfully with children diagnosed with this complex condition. Pulling content information from a team of professionals including schools boards, Hamilton Health Sciences corporation, and international autism authorities, Dr. Peter Szatmari and Dr. Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, a strong emphasis will be placed on communication, social skills, behavioural challenges, and family, sensory and educational issues. DEVS 2014 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Autism Spectrum Disorder Introduction This course examines the five major syndromes of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) including Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified according to their core features and their diagnostic criteria. This course provides an introduction to a neurodevelopmental and behavioural understanding of children with ASD. BESc 1001 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Behavioural and Family Supports This course will provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to design interventions that utilize the principles of applied behavioural analysis. Students will apply behavioural change strategies through the implementation of a variety of facilitative techniques. Students will develop skills in supporting and empowering the family as a unit within a framework of ethical collaboration.
