Students will learn the functions and operation of wired and wireless switches. This course reviews and reinforces the underlying concepts and standards of an Ethernet switched network. Web user Interface Design Design principles meet web standards and aesthetic challenges in this interface and design course. Topics covered include HTML and CSS page layout techniques, interactive interface elements, colour, file formats, and image and file optimization for web applications, typography, rollovers, and web page production. OL Writing for the Web Using a practical, hands-on approach, Writing for the Web takes students inside the fast-moving world of writing on the internet, looking at a range of the work assignments and working environments they can expect to encounter. The lectures and assignments examine specific issues and skills like writing for emphasis and visual impact, the basics of SEO (Search Engine Optimized) writing, sourcing images and video and simple techniques for incorporating them with text. Students will examine the various styles and requirements involved in writing for blogs, online magazines, commercial websites and other text-based models, including social media. The curriculum has a real-world focus at all times, and students will both participate in and create their own blogs, putting what they've learned to practice. Each type of writing assignment studied will include a look at work opportunities in terms of what is typically available and how to find those opportunities. DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES WORKER COuRSES Health Skills In this course the student will develop skills to assess the physical needs of persons with developmental disabilities. The student will develop skills required to administer health care and supervise self-care performed by an individual. Laboratory practice time will enhance the development of necessary skills. Lifespan Development This course introduces and defines the terms 'growth' and 'development' through the study of developmental sequence from conception to the end of the middle age years. This course presents development in the areas of physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. HUMN 1012 | 56 hrs $434 loc date day time BA JAN. 13 – APR. 14 TUE 6 – 10 P.M. Medication Administration This course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely administer medications and support self administration of medications for individuals with developmental disabilities. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in medication administration. Laboratory practice time will enhance the development of necessary skills. Pharmacology This course is designed to provide the student with an in-depth examination of medications and their actions as related to persons with developmental disabilities. Pharmacology This course is designed in accordance with DSW Provincial Standards to provide the student with an in-depth examination of medications and their actions as related to persons with developmental disabilities. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in medication administration. HLTH 1001 | 42 hrs $325.50 loc date day time OS JAN. 7 – APR. 15 WED 9 – NOON MU JAN. 12 – APR. 13 MON 6:30 – 9:30 P.M. Supportive Counselling This course introduces students to a problem model of helping. Emphasis is strongly placed on the values that form the foundation of supportive counselling: respect, genuineness, empathy and empowerment. Students learn about the significance and impact of relationships, processes of problem-management, finding solutions, value-based challenging, goal setting and implementation. Students practise and are evaluated in empathic listening. DEVS 2015 | 42 hrs $325.50 loc date day time BA MAY 5 – JULY 21 TUE 6:30 – 10 P.M. Sexual/Social Relationships Sexuality and social relationships are vital components of life and should be acknowledged and respected regardless of disability. Along with parents, DSWs often share responsibility to teach acceptable social and sexual behaviour. Some of the topics examined in this course include: sexual rights, vulnerability, masturbation, parenthood, inappropriate sexual behaviour, social skill development and techniques and sexual counselling models.
