Students clarify their values and establish a framework for ethical decision making. Students focus on the importance of moral philosophy as a component of the decision making process. pfpR 2015 | 45 hrs $420.75 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Professional Standards in Policing This course builds on students' prior learning in ethics, diversity, and police powers by taking them through a detailed overview of professional standards in policing. The course will demonstrate the relationship between ethical systems and the legal framework of professional standards of police services. The course will focus on detailed critical analyses of a variety of professional standards codes employed in police services in Canada. pOLc 4001 | 42 hrs $666.12 loc date day time JAN. 12 – APR. 17 ONLINE OL Provincial Offences Students interpret and apply provincial statutes. Topics studied include arrest, search and seizure authorities, common offences and the involvement of non-police agencies. Statutes examined will be: Provincial Offences Act, Liquor License Act, Trespass to Property Act, Residential Tenancies Act (2006), the Blind Persons' Rights Act, Mental Health Act, Coroners Act, Child and Family Services Act, and the Family Law Act. pfpR 2022 | 48 hrs $444 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Public and Media Relations Students in this course will identify and examine issues and theories related to appropriate conduct of media and public relations for police forces. Successes and failures with regard to media relations, from the point of view of police forces in Canada, will be examined and students will be challenged to devise recommendations as to how these situations should have been handled. pOLc 4004 | 42 hrs $666.12 loc date day time MAY 11 – AUG. 14 ONLINE OL Sexual Violence Sexual violence is an ugly reality and a societal concern. This course will examine the many forms of sexual violence perpetrated by individuals. Students will study sexual violence in the context of male-toward-female, female-toward-male, as well as incest and child abuse in families. Reasons for sexually deviant behaviours (why individuals do what they do), and the latest approaches and strategies for treating both victims and perpetrators will be examined. pSYL 1007 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Traffic Management In this course the students will develop the knowledge, skills and ability to locate and apply sections of the Provincial Traffic Law. Students will practise locating topics in the Acts and Regulations, will master the definitions required to interpret traffic law and will apply the law concerning Police Authorities, driver's licences, permits and rules of the road. Students will develop and practise interpersonal strategies and procedures for dealing with motor vehicle stops. pfpR 2024 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL youth in Conflict Students will examine the application of statutes affecting youth in conflict with the law from philosophical, contemporary and historical perspectives. As well, the context of the Youth Criminal Justice Act; Young Offenders Act; Child and Family Services Act and other relevant legislation; detention; interviewing; and processing through the court structure are examined. ThERAPEuTIC RECREATION COuRSES Adapted Recreation in Therapeutic Recreation The ability to systematically develop and effectively lead recreational activities suitable for individuals and groups with disabilities are integral skills of the Therapeutic Recreation practitioner. This course takes an applied approach in developing students' competence in areas including systematic programming planning, activity analysis, adaptation, activity leadership and creativity. This is accomplished through a variety of classroom and practical experiences where students, develop skills by participating and facilitating in a wide range of adapted activities.
