Students examine the mourning process; they survey different counselling theories and approaches, and identify groups and organizations dedicated to grief and bereavement issues. In addition, emerging trends such as art therapy, journalling and online communities are presented. Students will study the Hendricks' model of death notification, acute grief reactions, notifying children and the elderly of a sudden death (homicide, suicide, accidental), sudden infant death and parental grief, the grieving person's reactions, what can be done to facilitate mourning, pathological grief, risk factors and multi-cultural issues. Students will develop an understanding of the broad, interdisciplinary nature of thanatology and will explore personal attitudes and experiences of death. Current issues and topics in thanatology, such as death in the arts and media, and the business of the funeral industry, will also be explored. Inspirational readings and personal narratives offer practical insight and powerful life lessons that will assist students of thanatology in providing support to individuals facing or coping with death and will better prepare them to confront their own mortality. THAN 1003 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Mourning, Grief and Bereavement This course examines reactions and responses to death from a variety of perspectives. Students compare anticipated responses to death as determined by an individual's relationship to the deceased. Other factors influencing the grief response such as age, gender and manner of death are also considered. THAN 1004 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE MOuRNING, GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT COuRSES OL Religious Beliefs, Traditions and Customs of Death This course will explore attitudes towards death and the death rituals and ceremonies of world religious traditions including Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. Students will also explore the religious attitudes and beliefs concerning immortality and life after death. THAN 1005 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Disability Management, Ergonomics and Wellness Workplace injuries, occupational and non-occupational illness, increasing health care benefits costs and high employee absenteeism costs are causing organizations to address this issue head on by developing disability management, ergonomic and employee wellness programs. This course is designed to give the students the understanding of what causes employee absenteeism and how to develop and implement a disability, ergonomic or employee wellness program to reduce costs and improve productivity. OcHS 1003 | 42 hrs $635.46 loc date day time MAR. 2 – APR. 17 ONLINE Emergency Response Planning and Fire Prevention This course provides an overview of fire safety, protection and emergency planning, analyzing the risks of fire in the workplace and the benefits of prevention. In addition to fire safety all students gain an understanding of Emergency Planning. The key elements of emergency planning are examined: accountability after an evacuation, training of employees, and continuity of management during and after an emergency. OcHS 1002 | 42 hrs $635.46 loc date day time JAN. 5 – FEB. 20 ONLINE Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology This course provides the students with an introduction to industrial hygiene. It addresses many workplace hazards: chemical, physical, and biological, with the primary emphasis being on hazard assessment. Topics such as qualitative versus quantitative assessment, hierarchy of controls and the role of the occupational hygienist are examined. Students obtain practical experience performing qualitative workplace assessments and creating a workplace exposure prevention program.
