Students will examine drug legislation, pharmacological actions and come to understand the responsibility of dispensing drugs. This is not an applied medication course. HLTH 3002 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Intercultural Communication Introduction Students taking this course will learn the definition of culture and will be introduced to inter-cultural communication theories such as differences in gestures, personal spaces, and customs. By identifying intercultural issues in North American society, students will learn how they can apply intercultural communication theories to their daily lives and how they can respect and understand persons from other cultures. DVIR 1000 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Introduction to Developmental Disabilities This course provides an introduction to a wide variety of topics that are fundamental to further study in the DSW program. Students are encouraged to develop a philosophy of care and support that reflects the core values of inclusive community advocacy, value-based support and person-directed planning. Students will examine common developmental disabilities and gain awareness of the etiology, symptomatology and support needs/measures for individuals with these labels. OL Parent and Staff Training This subject introduces the student to techniques for training others specifically to implement behaviour change plans (technology transfer). Students will learn and practise techniques for individual and group presentation formats for the training of families or professionals. Students will also learn how to maintain procedural integrity, use performance feedback, evaluate the effects of training, and understand the challenges that may impact before, during and after mediator training. BESc 1006 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Person-Directed Planning Different ways of assisting people to achieve their desired lifestyle through person-directed planning will be explored. Several planning methods (technologies) will be studied. Evaluation of the supports provided as a result of the planning process will be examined in terms of outcome-based performance measures, accountability and quality of life indicators. This course investigates the fundamental elements of interpersonal communication. Skills in improving communication climates and resolving interpersonal conflicts are examined. Advances in biology and genetics suggest that races are not distinct biological categories but that race is a social, cultural and political construct. This course will examine the various perspectives on race. HUMA 1005 | 42 hrs $666.12 loc date day time OR JAN. 5 – APR. 17 ONLINE OL Racism and Discrimination Students taking this course will learn the definition of racism and discrimination, and will be able to identify the various sources of discrimination and racism resulting from cultural values and physical differences between individuals. By identifying racism and discrimination issues in North American society, students will learn how to analyze the sociological factors that cause bias and prejudice to surface in our society. The main objective of this course is to enhance sensitivity to and intolerance of mistreatment based on racial or ethnic background and appearance, and to consider how to handle these issues as professional individuals in a pluralistic Canadian society. As part of the course, students will communicate with one another through electronic discussion and learn to appreciate through various readings and assignments the many facets of racism and discrimination. This course will be of interest to workers in health services, education, human resources, and business as well as those people who want to enhance their knowledge and sensitivity to issues of racism and discrimination particularly when communicating with people from other cultures or with physical appearances that differ from their own. DVIR 1006 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Risk Factors of Common Psychiatric Disorders Students will recognize the risk factors and triggers associated with common psychiatric disorders in infant, child and adolescent populations. Early identification and awareness of the behaviours will enable the student to appropriately identify and assess the situation at hand. cHMH 1002 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Specialized Instructional Strategies This subject introduces the student to common evidence-based behavioural approaches applied in teaching individuals with autism new skills with an emphasis on strategies for teaching language, academic skills, activities of daily living, play skills, and social skills. Topics will be approached by providing the student with an understanding of the terms used, a description of the teaching techniques characterized in each of the modules (where applicable) and a basic understanding of the conceptual elements motivating the approaches.
