Students develop strategies to design and implement an effective personal fitness program to help them attain the Bona Fide fitness requirements standards for police work. This course introduces student to concepts in the health/fitness related field, including wellness, components of fitness, nutrition, cardiovascular diseases, stress in the law enforcement field and shift work. fITN 1012 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Police Governance This course examines the connections between policing and the political process. It examines issues and concerns over the various political processes behind law-making, particularly the criminal law, and it takes up several critical issues in civil and criminal law, including: human rights, gay and lesbian rights, immigration law, and criminal law. The course will sensitize students to the significance of politics and political power to the legal system in general, and the criminal justice system in particular. This course will build on students' prior learning in Diversity, Ethics, Police Powers, Criminal Law, Professional Standards, and Techniques of Investigation. pOLc 4011 | 42 hrs $666.12 loc date day time MAY 11 – AUG. 14 ONLINE OL Police Powers 1 This course will examine pertinent sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms and their impact on the Canadian Criminal Procedure. Citizen and police arrest and release authorities, police powers and search and seizure with and without warrant, police discretion and implications will be discussed. pfpR 2023 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE OL Police Powers 2 This course is a continuance of Police Powers 1 and will focus on police governance and accountability issues related to the Police Services Act, police complaints, First Nations policy and management and labour issues. Use of force theory, law and other legal issues related to the use of force will be discussed. Theory related to officer safety will be examined. pfpR 2041 | 28 hrs $289 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Policing in Cyberspace: Trends and Issues This course exposes students to the most current trends and issues related to policing in cyberspace. Students will research and discuss related news items from resources such as the internet, trade publications, association newsletters and the popular media. pOLc 4009 | 42 hrs $666.12 loc date day time OR MAY 11 – AUG. 14 ONLINE OL Interviewing and Investigation This course focuses on interviewing and investigation skills. Students develop the interviewing skills necessary to retrieve information from victims, witnesses and suspects. They also learn the basic steps of investigation including the practical development of note-taking and observation skills. pfpR 2039 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Introduction to Psychology 2 This course is a survey of various specialty areas within contemporary psychology. Students consider current psychological theories and research related to content areas such as Cognition, Intelligence, Motivation, Emotion, Personality, Social Behaviour, Psychology Disorders, Therapies and Health Psychology. Further, students integrate concepts of empiricism and specific inquiry across these content areas. This course in combination with Introduction to Psychology 1 provides students with the requisite knowledge to study at senior levels. pSYc 1001 | 42 hrs $633.78 loc date day time OR JAN. 5 – APR. 17 ONLINE OL Investigation and Evidence In this course students will examine the requirements of the investigation beyond the interview. They will learn the rules of evidence and develop the ability to apply said rules in the collection and presentation of evidence in a court of law. Forensic requirements, statute law and other related issues will be emphasized. pfpR 2038 | 42 hrs $397.50 date loc JAN. 13 – APR. 21 ONLINE MAY 12 – AUG. 18 ONLINE Organized Crime This course engages students in a historical and theoretical analysis of the origins and development of organized crime. Students will study the organization, function and structure of power, control of selected criminal organizations, as well as law enforcement's response and regulation of these activities. Provincial, national and global relationships of organized crime will be discussed. pOLc 4008 | 42 hrs $666.12 loc date day time MAY 11 – AUG. 14 ONLINE OL Penology This course provides an historical overview of corrections leading to the present penal system with focus on the prevailing ideologies and practices of the day. We also examine the effectiveness of various correctional strategies such as probation, parole, electronic monitoring, and boot camps. Federal correctional facilities are visited within the context of this course.
