Continuing Education & Part-time Studies Guide Winter/Spring 2015 continuingeducation@georgiancollege.ca 108 Teaching and Training adulTs programs SHIRLEY MccARTHY teaching and tRaining adults student I worked for 25 years as a registered nurse in a rural emergency room and have taught courses in Georgian's Practical Nursing program. I wanted add new teaching skills to make my lectures interesting and have students feel they learned something in every one of my classes. Taking the Teaching and Training Adults program helped me better understand the various learning styles. I constantly use the skills I learned in the program, trying to incorporate auditory, visual and kinesthetic elements into everything I teach. One important skill I learned was to use ice breakers, which helps me overcome my anxiety of teaching complete strangers and makes the students feel more comfortable with each other. One quote from an instructor by yeats really resonated with me: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
