16 ENGINEERING 2017 CENTRE FOR MARINE TRAINING AND RESEARCH marinetraining.ca ENGINE ROOM RATING (EXAM PREP) This course is intended for mariners with a minimum of six months engine room experience and will prepare them to challenge the TCMSS Engine Room Rating exam. Delivery will be a combination of theory and practical skills, e.g., Safe Working Practices, engine room watch-keeping procedures, communication skills, terms used in machinery spaces, the names of machinery and equipment, basic environmental protection, engine room alarm systems. Other Transport Canada requirements include: Medical certificate, MED DVS (formerly MED A1), B1, B2 or STCW Basic Safety and STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Marine Basic First Aid. ENGINE ROOM RESOURCE MANAGEMENT "Human error" can be a major factor in maritime accidents. This four-day course is aimed at improving safety and efficiency on board. This course is high in participation with group discussions, case studies, role playing and engine room simulation as the focus.Topics include situational awareness, error chain and risk, communications, STCW requirements for engineers, decision- making, teamwork and leadership, stress and fatigue, Master-chief Engineer relationship, engine room simulation. OIL AND CHEMICAL TANKER FAMILIARIZATION This course covers the design and development of different types of oil and chemical tankers, their operations and handling systems during loading, transit, discharge and washing, and the safe handling of their cargo. Topics include the chemical and physical properties of different cargo, electrostatics, basic gas principles, health and safety emergency procedures, and pollution prevention. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued a Transport Canada certificate for Oil and Chemical Tanker Familiarization and will be able to assume the duties and responsibilities related to the loading, discharging or transfer of cargo and the operation of cargo equipment.
