English Our program produces graduates who can solve complex problems, communicate clearly to a variety of audiences and create stylish texts that both inspire and inform. Grounded in literary criticism and theory, it develops students' interpretive and communicative skills. Students acquire a range of critical reading practices, sharpening their ability to respond to a historically and geographically wide range of literary texts and genres. Students enjoy numerous lecture series, poetry and book readings, as well as literary art exhibits on a wide range of trending topics delivered by both academics and community members. Career opportunities are diverse and wide ranging for graduates. History History students learn what historians have discovered, but are also taught the historical method and are encouraged to think critically about the past and its influence on the present. The program offers two streams: North American history and European history; students take courses in each stream, but focus their studies on one. Courses cover themes like women's history, the history of education, intellectual history, the history of social movements, environmental history, the history of Northern Ontario and medieval history. Students have graduated to successful careers in a wide range of fields including business, journalism, politics, education, the arts, governmental policy and research. Political Science Examines power within society on national and international levels to explain how resources and values are allocated. Political science students gain knowledge about political systems and political ideas and develop analytical thinking and writing skills. The program has two streams: Canadian government/ public administration and international relations/ comparative politics. Highlights include planning and participation in Model Parliament at the House of Commons in Ottawa, an exchange program with five EU universities and attending CANIMUN, the Canadian Model United Nations held annually in Ottawa. Policy analysis, management, governmental administration, entrepreneurship, international relations, journalism, law, human resources, education and law are just some of the career opportunities for graduates. Psychology Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behaviour and mental processes, which includes normal and abnormal human (and animal) behaviour and related psychological, social and biological processes. Students are required to take introductory courses in Psychology, Statistics, Psychometrics and Scientific Method. Other choices include Developmental Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Brain and Behaviour, Emotion, Cognitive Psychology, Learning and Psychopathology. Students find this discipline fascinating as they explore how people think, behave and react to various situations and one another. Sociology Sociology students gain a firm foundation in classical and contemporary social theories. They are exposed to a variety of research methodologies. Courses cover: social and moral regulation; the social construction of race, class, gender and sexuality; the sociology of childhood, youth, aging and of the family; sociology of health; globalization and post-colonial theory; food insecurity and sovereignty; women and development; labour and trade union; state formation and policy; the social organization of knowledge; sociology of the environment; and the sociology of education. Graduates are sought- after for their critical thinking and strong research and communication skills, as well as for their aptitude to analyze and appreciate diversity.
