This session will outline some common scenarios where immigration and academics cross, as well as resources for faculty. We know not to use generalizations to judge a person, but we use them to define a generation of people. If you have ever heard someone say something like, "they probably want a 10th place ribbon for that", you may think that someone has an expectation that people are acting in an expected way because of their age. Understanding the fundamentals of someone's upbringing helps us to understand what they have experienced in life, but, if that is all we expect of them, it does not help us build a relationship. B A R B A R A S T U H L E M M E R "Foster youth and former foster youth graduate high school and attend post-secondary education at drastically reduced rates in comparison to the general public. Despite extensive research on this learner demographic in other nations, there has been scant investigation into foster youth post- secondary access and persistence in Canada. Through an overview of recent research in Ontario, this session introduces the issue of foster youth under-representation, identifies potential support needs in and out of the classroom, and discusses how to best support foster youth persistence and success.
