12 NAVIGATION REGISTER ONLINE marinetraining.ca SIMULATED ELECTRONIC NAVIGATION LIMITED (SEN L) SEN Limited is a 30-hour course intended for Officers of commercial vessels over 60 gross tons and fishing Masters. Attendees will gain knowledge of the principles, the ability to use and the skill required for the proper operation of typical navigation electronic equipment found on board a coastal vessel. Topics include plotting and charting exercises, basic knowledge of navigational instruments such as GPS, Echo Sounders, LORAN C, and collision avoidance. Course code: MARI 0088 Prerequisites: knowledge of chartwork and navigation safety, CDN Course length: five days (30 hours) Course fee: $825 PILOTAGE This course will enhance the technical knowledge to complement the qualifications and experience of professional mariners to achieve competency to undertake Pilotage duties throughout the Great Lakes Pilotage Authority (GLPA) districts. Deck Officers who have successfully completed this program will be able to demonstrate that they have the skills needed to pilot the various rivers and ports in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence system. These pilotage skills will include: • planning a passage in the district • conducting their ship safely and efficiently, avoiding obstacles to navigation • deciding what action to take in bad weather and in emergency situations • performing docking and departure maneuvers, canalling, anchoring, and piloting in ice Prerequisites: CDN, six months watch-keeping experience or company recommendation Course length: five days (35 hrs) Course fee: $3,700 per person SHIP-HANDLING The course examines the theory and practice of ship-handling. It includes an abundance of simulator time for attempting and mastering various maneuvers. The course is specifically designed and recommended for Chief Mates who will soon sail as Master. Subject matter includes the proper relationship between engines and helm for ship maneuvering; and, the effects on ship behaviour caused by wind, current, shallow water, banks, narrow channels and conditions of loading. Everything is reinforced by practical application exercises performed on the bridge and the simulators. Course code: MARI 0109 Course length: five days (30 hours) Course fee: $2,350 ADVANCED SHIP-HANDLING This course is based on sophisticated ship simulation which portrays both the vessel and the geographic areas in which the vessel is moving. Training in the simulator is provided by skilled Georgian College personnel who are guided by Canadian Ship Masters with many years of experience on the seaway. The course is designed around major ship maneuvering evolutions, including traffic situations, arrival/departure, anchoring, and maneuvering in channels. Programs can be tailored to specific shipping company operations, vessels and ports.
