GEORGIAN COMMUNITY PAYS IT FORWARD WITH FAB 50 CHALLENGE Students, staff and alumni celebrated the college's 50th anniversary in a big (and meaningful!) way through the college's Fab 50 Challenge. Many exceeded their goals to collect 50 items-of-a-kind or dollars to donate to charity. Thank you to everyone who took up the challenge. Here are some of the highlights: • Early Childhood Education students hosted a book fair at the Orillia Campus to raise funds to hand out 100 children's books at their placements and to local pre- school and elementary schools • staffers Kristin Taylor and Kristy Atkinson organized a Fab 50 raffle whereby 50 individuals or businesses donated 50 prizes worth a minimum of $50. They raised $1,420 plus bags full of non-perishables to donate to the Georgian Food Locker. • human resources staff also made the Food Locker the focus of their campaign and collected 50 cans of spaghetti sauce and 50 packages of pasta • staffers Jenna Peters and Kathryn Peet were inspired by their love of pets and collected 100 dog toys for the Barrie SPCA • external relations staff wrote 50 notes for 50 seniors at Roberta Place Long Term Care in Barrie that were distributed to residents who do not receive many visitors. They also donated 80 items of clothing to Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie, which assists women at critical life transitions of employment or re-employment. • staff member Tom Gardzinski led an initiative to donate 50 recycling and garbage bins to The Lighthouse Soup Kitchen and Shelter in Orillia • Owen Sound's Health and Wellness department collected 59 bottles of adult vitamins to send with students and staff on the annual Dominican Republic medical mission trip • staff member Jasmine Hanratty asked colleagues to fill 50 baby bottles with loose change in support of the Barrie Pregnancy Resource Centre • the Orangeville Campus joined with Dufferin County's Community Development department to raise $500 in their Wear Your Jeans to Work fundraiser. They gave the money to Habitat for Humanity, and the local Home Hardware added 50 tape measures to the donation. • staff member Heather Boyd collected 425 gently used books for Better World Books More challenges continue to take place until the end of the year.
