This course introduces the principles of emergency communication
and concentrates on generic roles and responsibilities for police,
fire and ambulance service communicators for this position. Part
I identifies specific protocols for the various roles in emergency
services and concentrates on the communication process for
effective communication as a call taker and/or dispatcher for all three
emergency services.

The purpose of the Emergency Services Communicator Course
Part II is to advance the student to practical application in the
role of emergency service communicator. It will provide the
student with competence and confidence in applying emergency

Part II provides the fundamentals of the role of the emergency
communicator in police, fire and ambulance services.

Crisis Negotiation
In partnership with Canadian Critical Incident Inc. (CCII), Introduction
to Crisis Negotiation provides a general understanding of the
role and responsibilities of a crisis negotiator. The concepts and
techniques of crisis negotiations and subject assessment, while
dealing with the challenging, demanding, and potentially violent
interactions that can arise when encountering persons suffering from
mental illness and in a state of crisis, are reviewed. Content is used
to instruct Ontario police officers as crisis negotiators.

In this course registered nurses (RNs) and registered practical
nurses (RPNs) learn the standards of practice in PeriAnesthesia
Nursing in order to provide high quality anesthetic care to patients.
RNs and RPNs practice nursing processes, decision making,
critical thinking and inquiry while learning the preoperative and
postoperative phases of recovery. Anesthetic agents and post
anesthesia complications are explored. Must be an RN or RPN
and provide College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) license number
upon registration. For out-of-province RNs or RPNs completing this
course please note that this course is based on the Standards of
PeriAnesthesia Nursing Practice in Ontario. Out-of-province RNs
or RPNs must provide nursing license number from their province's
nursing regulatory body upon registration.

Venipuncture, Introduction
This eight-hour workshop is designed to assist the student in
developing the required skills to initiate an intravenous, provide
care to patients with intravenous access and to draw blood samples
for testing. Students apply and demonstrate the principles of IV/
phlebotomy in the laboratory setting. Students must either be an
RN, RPN or paramedic or be enrolled in the final semester of one of
the following programs: BScN, Practical Nursing, or Primary Care or
Advanced Care Paramedic.

Advanced Foot Care − RN/RPN
Registered nurses (RN) and registered practical nurses (RPN) learn
non-invasive foot care through a combination of theory, lab and
clinical practice. Participants focus on the analysis of advanced foot
problems, treatment, infection control, client education and scope of
practice for the RN/RPN. Participants are asked to avoid cutting their
toenails for 3-4 weeks prior to the course. A comprehensive manual
and instruments are provided with the course. Must be a registered
nurse or a registered practical nurse and provide CNO license
number upon course registration. On the last day of the course,
students provide foot-care services to community members under
the supervision of the instructor in a clinical setting. Participation in
the clinical setting requires a clinical preparedness permit, which is
to be submitted on the first day of the course. Permit must include
flu vaccine-valid for current flu season- police check and vulnerable
sector screen – valid within six months, as well as CPR.
