General principles of human communication such as verbal interaction and listening are explored. Students learn effective communication skills with patients, residents, co-workers and supervisors. Students also have the opportunity to develop writing skills and presentation skills with a major emphasis on documenting and charting food-intake measuring techniques, communication of therapeutic diets and nutrition support required for treatment. FSWR 0023 | 42 HRS | ONLINE $423.02 Food Service Worker − Institutional Food Service This course focuses on the food service worker's role in health- care food service with an emphasis on requirements under the Long-Term Care Homes Act. Various food production, delivery and service systems are introduced and departmental operations such as purchasing, receiving, storage and inventory are discussed. Quality management and costs controls are also addressed. FSWR 0020 | 42 HRS | ONLINE $423.02 Food Service Worker − Introduction to Nutrition This course introduces students to the basic principles of human nutrition and the role of nutrition in the health-care environment. Nutrient composition of foods and current nutrition recommendations for carbohydrate, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals and water is discussed. An introduction to digestion, absorption and transport of nutrients is provided. Energy balanced and body composition and special considerations for nutrition throughout the lifecycle is also explored. FSWR 0021 | 42 HRS | ONLINE $423.02 Food Service Worker − Quantity Food Preparation This course focuses on the cooking principles and methods for preparing food in large quantities. Students are introduced to control systems used in quantity food production including menu planning, standardized recipes, portion control, forecasting, scheduling and service. Various food types are examined including sandwiches, salads, desserts, beverages, soups, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, and cheese. Texture modified and special menu items are also explored. This course emphasizes the importance of quality improvement and customer satisfaction in quantity food production. FSWR 0024 | 42 HRS | ONLINE $423.02 Food Service Worker − Nutrition in Health Care This course focuses on the basic principles of diet therapy. Several therapeutic diets are discussed, as well as tube feedings and commercial preparations. FSWR 0025 | 42 HRS | ONLINE $423.02 Food Service Worker − Sanitation and Safety This course focuses on preventing food-borne illness within the health-care environment. Safe food-handling practices and regulations, and acts governing food service are emphasized. Quality improvement and risk management programs such as HACCP are also discussed. Safe working environments for the Food Service Worker are explored including fire safety, managing safety hazards, prevention of common injuries, and an introduction to first aid. FSWR 0022 | 42 HRS | ONLINE $423.02 ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR SUPPORTIVE CARE ONLINE PROGRAM Essential Skills for Supportive Care − Infection Control and Prevention In this course, students focus on principles of infection prevention and control. Students are introduced to the concepts and practices of infection prevention and control and acquire knowledge and skills for managing the prevention and control of infections and disease. This course is the first of seven modules required for the Essential Skills for Supportive Care micro-credential certificate. HSCI 0264 | 4 HRS | ONLINE $57.52 Essential Skills for Supportive Care − Mobility and Safety In this course, students examine principles of safety in relation to positioning in bed or a chair, lifts, transfers, and ambulation of a client. Students learn the right to refuse with regard to client and staff safety. Students review proper body mechanics and how to report any problems. This course is part of the Essential Skills for Supportive Care micro-credential certificate. HSCI 0266 | 4 HRS | ONLINE $57.52 Essential Skills for Supportive Care − Basic and Pain In this course, students focus on the principles of basic head to toe, environmental, functional, mental and pain assessments of the client in relation to the role of Personal Support Worker, Health Care Attendant or entry-level health-care provider. This course is part of the Essential Skills for Supportive Care micro-credential certificate. HSCI 0269 | 4 HRS | ONLINE $57.52 Essential Skills for Supportive Care − Client's Rights and Workplace Legislation In this course, students are introduced to the current Ontario legislation that guides the day-to-day activities of health-care attendants, their health and safety, and the health and safety of those in their care. This course is part of the Essential Skills for Supportive Care micro-credentials certificate. HSCI 0271 | 3 HRS | ONLINE $57.52 Essential Skills for Supportive Care − Documentation and Terminology In this course, students are introduced to the terminology they will encounter as part of the health-care team and to identify medical terms by their components. Students learn the importance of effective documentation for patient care, including Electronic Medical Records (EMR). This course is part of the Essential Skills for Supportive Care micro-credential certificate. HSCI 0272 | 6 HRS | ONLINE $57.52 Essential Skills for Supportive Care − Care Time and Stress Management Learning to manage time effectively can significantly reduce other stressors in daily life. Students learn about different types of stress and identify common stressors that can impact personal performance while discovering strategies and techniques to promote resiliency and effective responses in demanding situations.
