18 MASTERS CERTIFICATES 2017 CENTRE FOR MARINE TRAINING AND RESEARCH marinetraining.ca MASTER CERTIFICATES MASTER LIMITED CERTIFICATE (EXAM PREP) Every commercial vessel over five gross tonnage (including passenger vessels) must have someone on board with a Master Limited Certificate. This course is intended for mariners wishing to attain certification to operate a small commercial vessel up to 60 gross tonnage. Topics include navigation safety, aids to navigation, meteorology, ship stability, shipmaster's business, chart knowledge, coastal navigation and general seamanship. This course includes classroom instruction as well as practical training and assessment utilizing Georgian College's state-of-the-art simulators. Practically all types of small commercial vessels are simulated with all of the systems you might have on-board your own vessel and more. Simulated exercises will include Rules of the Road and Navigation Systems, as well as Ship handling and Maneuvering. Bring your sea legs as the sensation of motion is realistic and dramatic. There are no prerequisites to take the Master Limited (under 60 gross tonnage) course. Listed below are the additional Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security requirements for a Master Limited (under 60 gross tonnage) certificate: • TCMSS Marine Medical (must be obtained from TCMSS approved doctor) • Marine Basic First Aid • Marine Emergency Duties DVS (formerly MED A1, A2), MED DVPS (formerly MED A2) for passenger-carrying vessels • ROC-M radio licence or ROC-MC depending on area of operation • Two months sea service, performing deck-related duties on a ship of not less than five (5) gross tonnage After the course is completed, and all the requirements listed above are met, candidates will be required to contact TCMSS and complete the written, oral and practical examinations with a TCMSS examiner. Questions will be based on the area of operation, type of craft, number of passengers carried on board and type of equipment carried on board. The Master Limited (under 60 gross tonnage) Certificate issued by TCMSS is vessel specific and area specific.
