HEALTH, WELLNESS AND SCIENCES HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Opticians are long-standing members of the health care delivery team in a field for which there is a growing universal need. Registered opticians may dispense eyewear independently or as part of the eye care team. As recognized professionals under the Regulated Health Professions Act, career possibilities exist in • large retail optical chains • independent dispensaries • medical clinics • entrepreneurship FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS Graduates of OPTI may be granted credit toward degree studies at the following institutions via articulation and transfer agreements: Davenport University (US), Thompson Rivers University (BC), University of New Brunswick Saint John (NB) and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (ON). GeorgianCollege.ca/OPTI OPTICIANRY CO-OP OPTI This program offers a blend of health care and business management. The theory and practical experience in labs/clinics teaches students to competently dispense eyeglasses, contact lenses and sub-normal vision devices. The program also focuses on the expertise necessary to surface, fabricate, repair, customize and modify eyewear to the patient's or client's needs. Emphasis is also placed on entrepreneurship by teaching how to establish and operate a small business, how to use effective sales techniques as well as enhancing communication and interpersonal skills in order to be successful in the optical retail environment. Upon successful completion of the academic and co-operative education semesters, students are eligible to write the national registration examinations which allow them, if successful, to practise in Canada as Registered Opticians. Comprehensive exams are offered at the student's expense in order to prepare for the National exams. Successful graduates are eligible to seek employment in: • paramedic services • other agencies throughout Canada Additional opportunities may be found in: • the field of health and safety • event medical services • the military Please note that employment in Ontario as a paramedic requires a current class 'F' licence. It is the graduate's responsibility to acquire this licence prior to seeking employment. Graduates of the program will have demonstrated the ability to safely and competently care for a diverse population in emergency and non-emergency situations. They will also be expected to administer medical interventions, including controlled medical acts, and provide compassionate care. The program is comprised of classroom, laboratory, hospital clinical and field placement experience.
