The theory and practical experience in labs and clinics teaches students to competently dispense eyeglasses, contact lenses and sub-normal vision devices. The program also focuses on the expertise necessary to surface, fabricate, repair, customize and modify eyewear to the patient/ clients' needs. Emphasis is also placed on entrepreneurship by teaching how to establish and operate a small business and be successful in the optical retail environment. Upon successful completion of the academic and co-operative education semesters, students are eligible to write the national registration examinations which allow them, if successful, to practise in Canada as registered opticians. Career opportunities Registered opticians may dispense eyewear independently or as part of the eye care team. Consequently, many aspire to operate their own businesses. As recognized professionals under the Regulated Health Professions Act, career possibilities exist in: • large retail optical chains • independent dispensaries • medical clinics Future study options: Graduates of OPTI may be granted credit toward degree studies at the following institutions via articulation and transfer agreements: Davenport University (US), University of New Brunswick Saint John (NB), and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (ON). FIRST YEAR FEES: $4,609.06 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OSSD or equivalent with • Grade 12 English (C or U) with recommended 75% minimum • Grade 12 Mathematics (C or U) with recommended 75% minimum • Grade 11 or 12 Biology (C or U) with recommended 75% minimum • Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry (C or U) with recommended 75% minimum SELECTION PROCESS All applicants must write an admission test (HOAE). Applicants will be assessed and ranked based on the results of their testing and their academic background. This program provides an opportunity for students to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to be an integral member of a veterinary health care team. Through in-class theory and simulations, combined with actual clinical experience in local facilities, students learn to care for and handle animals, understand the basic principles of normal and abnormal life processes, and carry out routine laboratory and clinical procedures. Typical activities include obtaining and recording patient histories, collecting and/or processing specimens, preparing patients, instruments and equipment for surgery, assisting in medical and surgical procedures, providing specialized nursing care, taking and developing x-rays.
