WORK OPPORTUNITIES Yes! International students can legally work in Canada. International students with a valid study permit enrolled in a co-op or internship program must apply for a work permit to be able to legally work off-campus during their co-op terms. Since each co-op semester may involve a different employer, the work permit will have conditions stating that Georgian College is the employer and Georgian decides where the student can legally work for the co-op or internship placement. This permit only allows students to work off-campus in positions related to their co-op requirements. Students must have the co-op work permit before they can begin work. Students with a study permit for a program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least six months in duration will be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, on or off campus: • during regular academic sessions and • full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break. To qualify, you must: • have a valid study permit • be a full-time student • be studying in an academic, vocational or professional training program • This option is NOT available to English as a Second Language or English for Academic Purpose students. Foreign health care students can complete their clinic internships in Canada without a work permit if the work is for the primary purpose of acquiring training – a normal practicum should last four months or less. Off-campus work: For details visit www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study- changes.asp After graduation, International students are eligible to apply for a one or three-year post-graduate work permit. This allows you to gain Canadian work experience. This type of work is exempt from HRSDC approval. Students must have a valid study permit and apply within 90 days of graduation (the date the your final marks are posted). Students' Administrative Council (SAC) The Students' Administrative Council works to enhance your student experience as well as to support you when you need it. Representing all Georgian College students, each campus has a SAC made up of student representatives who are elected annually. In Barrie, SAC oversees the athletic facilities, orientation, The Last Class Bar and Grill and The First Class Café. SAC also supports movie nights, lectures, concerts, winter carnival week, trips, pub nights and more!
