When Ken Munday started the Computer Programmer Analyst program at Georgian, revolutionizing an industry was not on his short-term goal list. But that's just what the 37-year-old business owner did with his company Stone Orchard Software (SOS). By developing much-needed technology for the death care sector, Munday has signifi cantly improved the way that cemeteries, crematoriums and funeral homes store, retrieve and update their records, making it easier for people to fi nd the fi nal resting places of their loved ones. "I remember someone was trying to locate the grave of a veteran and because of the way in which the cemetery's manual records were organized, it made the ordeal last longer than it should have," Munday said. "It was then that we realized it was time to modernize the industry by cross-referencing all the information, which could not be done manually." SOS started on Windows 3.1 and was written specifi cally for Barrie Union Cemetery. Since then, Munday has honed the technology and now, more than 550 cemeteries around the globe use SOS. To date, his company has automated and secured the records of millions of deceased people in Canada, the United States, Australia and Africa. And, to keep up with the ever-changing technological world, with the help of Google Earth, the SOS system now includes the iCemetery app to pinpoint the resting place of your loved one from your smartphone. "The new app assists families and friends when they are looking for help the most. They just type in the name of their loved one, and the location and coordinates will come up. It doesn't get much easier," says Munday who is rolling out the app one cemetery at a time. Munday's innovations have made him a well-known and respected leader in his fi eld, and he is a popular speaker at industry conferences, seminars and workshops. ken Munday Computer Programmer Analyst, 1999 President, Stone Orchard Software stoneorchardsoftware.com 2013 Premier's Awards nominee "The new app assists families and friends when they are looking for help the most.
