The program The program philosophy and curriculum incorporate and utilize the concepts of caring as the basis of nursing practice. Students and faculty work together to explore nursing knowledge and caring theory. In the classroom, students in collaborative groups work through learning activities and focus on the lived experiences of individuals, families and groups. Knowledge from the program courses is integrated into the care of clients, families and groups in a variety of settings. To provide quality practicum placements, students will be placed in a variety of agencies in the region serviced by the campus. Students are required to provide their own transportation. This program is recognized by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Graduate career opportunities Hospitals, homes for the aged, nursing homes, community health centres, doctors' offices Admission requirements OSSD or equivalent with • Grade 12 English (C or U) • Grade 12 mathematics (C or U) • Grade 11 or 12 biology (C or U) • Grade 12 C or Grade 11 or 12 U chemistry OR Grade 12 C or Grade 11 or 12 U physics Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older) and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED and equivalency testing. For complete details, refer to GeorgianCollege.ca/admissions/policies-procedures/ Applicants who have taken courses from a recognized and accredited postsecondary institution and/or have relevant life/learning experience may also be considered for admission. Refer to the Credit Transfer Centre website for details: GeorgianCollege.ca/ admissions/credit-transfer/ Level HCP CPR and Standard First Aid certificate required prior to entering the program (online courses are not acceptable); proof will be required during the first week of classes. Up-to-date immunization records in compliance with the Public Hospitals Act. Hepatitis B vaccination is required for the student's own safety. Applicants are encouraged to obtain volunteer or work experience in a health or human service field to assist them in making career choices. To be eligible for all practicum placements, students must also have a completed Clinical Preparedness Permit and a record of mask fit test, renewed every two years (will be done at the college in semester one). Selection process • Health Occupations Aptitude Examination applicants will be ranked based on the results of their testing and academic grades. Criminal record check, including vulnerable sector check, required prior to field placement. Graduation requirements Students are required to complete 2 communications courses • 24 mandatory courses • 3 general education courses to be chosen from the college list Future study options Graduates of this program may be granted credit toward degree studies at other institutions including Athabasca University, Laurentian University (Barrie Campus), Laurier Brantford, Nipissing University, Thompson Rivers University, University of New Brunswick, Saint John and University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
