BACHELOR OF HUMAN SERVICES (POLICE STUDIES) The program This program encourages a broadened critical understanding of the nature, role and function of policing. The program content values an integrated learning approach to police education that will provide a diverse spectrum of students with the critical mix of professionalism, technical/legal expertise and analytical skills necessary to succeed in justice-related careers. This multi-dimensional degree complements existing educational initiatives, offering courses that encourage increasing levels of thinking and analysis, and which are dynamic in design, rationale and delivery. Graduate career opportunities Provincial and municipal police services; private police and investigators; Royal Canadian Mounted Police; Canadian Armed Forces, bylaw enforcement; asset management protection; correctional services Admission requirements OSSD or equivalent with • Minimum overall average of 65% • Six Grade 12 U or M level courses • Grade 12 English U Applicants must meet minimum averages to receive final acceptance. Students presenting equivalent qualifications will also be considered for admission. A Grade 12 university or university/college mathematics course is highly recommended. Mature applicants (21 years of age by Dec. 31 of the year of admission) may also be considered for admission providing their previous school performance and/or recent work record suggest a strong possibility of academic success. Applicants must have been away from formal education for at least one year prior to beginning studies. Mature applicants must meet subject prerequisites prior to registration. In Canada, various federal, provincial and municipal regulations outline special requirements for those entering careers as law enforcement officers. Students wishing to pursue such careers should ensure they will be able to meet the physical and educational requirements before enrolling. Potential students with criminal records should discuss their personal situations with college counsellors before enrolling in the program. An official criminal record could prevent a student from completing program requirements and from finding related employment after graduation. Graduation requirements Students are required to complete 29 mandatory courses • 3 optional courses • 8 Liberal Arts electives to be chosen from the college list • 2 co-op work terms Future study options Graduates of this program may be granted credit toward graduate studies at other institutions including Davenport University (U.S.A.), St. Mary's University and Griffith University (Australia).
