college, cricket and
creating community
Jashank Vyas (class of 2010) saw a future in Canada
and found it in Barrie where he has become an active
member of the community, sharing his passion for
cricket.
When Jashank moved to the area in 2007 to attend
Georgian's Mechanical Engineering Technology –
Automotive Manufacturing program, he saw very
little of this bat-and-ball game, which has a huge
following worldwide.
Three years later, he co-founded the Barrie Cricket
League and is currently serving as its president.
Jashank's unique path from India took him through
New Zealand where he completed public school before
coming to Georgian. He found his Georgian experience
incredible.
"The faculty and team were extremely supportive and
felt like family. Everyone from the registrar's office to
the Segal International Centre, to the co-op department
have been equally responsible for my success and career
growth," Jashank recalls.
His experience at Georgian also included meeting his
wife, Neha.
Since graduating, he has been able to develop his
skills in the automotive manufacturing and engineering
solutions sectors. He also completed a post-diploma
Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Manufacturing)
from Cape Breton University.
For the past three years, Jashank has been working as
the technical and quality assurance manager at Hercules
Sealing Products Canada.
Jashank plays just as hard as he works and he's growing
the game of cricket's ranks in the community, as well
as working on developing a permanent cricket pitch.
The Barrie Cricket League has no membership fee and
overall, Jashank estimates more than 2,000 people have
been associated with the club in its 13-year history.
"Cricket has always been my passion. I always put cricket
first," says Jashank with a chuckle. "Since becoming
president of the league in 2021, my focus has been, and
will be, for the growth of cricket in Barrie and to ensure
that necessary facilities are developed for the continued
growth and inclusion of the sport."
"The journey at Georgian was
quite incredible. The faculty
and team were extremely
supportive and felt like family."
