15 GEORGIANVIEW FALL 2023
From sliding into an Olympic gold medal in front of a
hometown crowd to hosting a long-time television show
to receiving an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Studies
degree from Georgian, Jon Montgomery (class of
2000, hon. degree 2010) has experienced some pretty
remarkable adventures.
Yet the Canadian celebrity always tries to keep his feet
firmly planted on the ground.
From the moment "Monty" was handed that pitcher
of beer as he walked through the Olympic village in
Whistler after winning Olympic gold for skeleton racing,
to setting a slate of new contestants on their way on
The Amazing Race Canada, the Georgian grad has
always been willing to step up.
His to-do list to do good is lengthy. On one particular
day it included creating a video for Georgian's
convocation and gala, another for Special Olympics as
well two personal greetings.
"... When
you seek out
things that are
meaningful, it
doesn't seem
like work ..."
"I do it for things that have resonance for me, " he
says. "When you seek out things that are meaningful, it
doesn't seem like work. It's as much a gift to yourself as
anyone else."
Jon happily stays engaged with Georgian where he got
his footing. He credits the college with helping him find
direction and setting him on his way from participating
in his first Georgian College Auto Show in 1997, finding
out about and then getting involved in auto auctions,
working in Winnipeg and discovering skeleton racing
while on a job as an auctioneer in Calgary.
At Georgian, he said, he learned about an industry and
became equipped with the tools and resources and the
belief in himself to differentiate himself from others.
Just this fall, the 10th season of The Amazing Race
Canada was announced with Jon at the helm, an
achievement he's happy to celebrate.
