25 GEORGIANVIEW FALL 2021 DIGITAL EDITION FACULTy SPOTLIGHT You are currently a member of the Georgian College Alumni Association Executive Council (AAEC). Tell us why you volunteer with the association, and what you hope to accomplish during your time with the council. I joined Georgian as an international student from India. Georgian College along with my friends and family, has played a big role in my personal life and career so far. Volunteering with the council is my way of giving back to the community, sharing my experiences and helping current students to succeed in their future. I want to support and assist the AAEC with achieving its goals and encourage my fellow alumni to be more engaged with their college. What is something that few people know about you? I am an introvert. I was very shy and hesitated to speak with others. Working at the math lab and engineering hub as a student during my time at Georgian helped me a lot in my personal life. It put me directly in contact with other students and helped me build my confidence to network with others. In my opinion, it was proof that we grow when we force ourselves out of our comfort zone. If you could have coffee with anyone in history, who would you choose and why? If I could, I would love to sit and have coffee with Nikola Tesla. I am just fascinated by his ideas and contributions that formed the basis of the modern electrical supply system. Our current standard of living would not have been possible without Tesla's work in development of three phase AC motors and radio waves. What is something that you've learned, or become more aware of during the COVID-19 pandemic? Any lessons, reminders or takeaways? I have learned that it is very important to keep in touch with your friends and family. Even a short phone call is sufficient to show that you do think and care about them. I also learned that if you have the right people in your life; staying indoors for an extended period of time is manageable. Staying healthy, mentally, and physically is equally important. I love to travel and visit new places; it is something I have missed during the past two years. What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Georgian? Georgian is a wonderful college and offers a wide variety of programs to suit your interests. Students entering postsecondary education now are facing a different type of education delivery system with remote learning and hybrid classes. Georgian has invested a lot to keep up with students' needs in the current pandemic environment, and it has the facilities and resources to help all students achieve their goals and succeed. Georgian faculty and staff are very friendly, supportive and they go out of their way to help and assist any students in need. | Shravan and Yang Yang at the Great Wall of China.
