She began brainstorming all the possibilities that were available, but during this period of reflection, she recognized that her situation was not isolated. In fact, many others are faced with similar challenges, and this was an opportunity to help them as well. "Georgian College was my first choice," she recalls. "It not only offered a great program with great reviews, but also a fast-track program which allowed me to cram two years of schooling into less than a year and a half, which was a great option for me at the time." A mature student, Angel-Leigh recalls the awkwardness during the early days of returning to school. "The one thing that always stands out in my mind and was the biggest give away to my age," she says with a laugh, "was that while I pulled out my pen and paper to take notes, the majority of the class were pulling out their laptops." But these feelings were soon replaced with feeling empowered. Angel-Leigh had chosen this path and was going to choose how her future unfolded. Angel-Leigh and her husband found their way through the challenges, and renewed their commitment to one another. As a couple again, they made the determination that they'd like to open a centre together that provided services to military members and veterans, as well as to first responders, including police, firefighters and paramedics. Cadence Health and Wellness Inc. has now been opened for approximately two years in Newmarket, Ontario. The centre offers psychology services, as well as assessment and re-assessment services, weekly peer- support meetings, and social events such as baseball, axe throwing and archery "to add a little bit of fun into the mix. The bonding that happens during those events is amazing to witness. You have people that have never met before, interacting with each other as though they have known each other for years, connecting with others who can relate to their situation," notes Angel-Leigh. "The program forced us to open our minds into realizing that regardless of the situation, we have to remember the human factor," she says, referring to the influence that her Georgian education has on her professional practice today.
