18 GEORGIANVIEW 2019-20 WINTER RESEARCH AND INNOvATION How do you improve the cost base, product quality and energy efficiency of a mill? That's what Samuel set out to answer as a co-op student in his final year at Georgian, working as part of a larger student and faculty research team. His work resulted in multiple recommendations that are transforming the way a business in cottage country operates. Rich gives students the opportunity to use their technical skills to create practical solutions for industry needs. As part of his research, students collaborate with community partners and apply web and mobile technologies to real-world challenges and issues. Recent projects have included online training and job search applications for the Simcoe Muskoka Workforce Development Board, an interactive community safety map in collaboration with police degree students and the OPP, and a value-add software as a service application for a local clean room manufacturer. These are the questions Troy, Kendra and Evan helped answer for a Barrie business planning its next 10 years. The Bachelor of Business Administration (Management and Leadership) students worked with their faculty advisor to dive into demographic, market and industry data, then completed an in-depth competitive analysis.
