Alumni: Tell us how you're doing 17 GEORGIANVIEW 2019-20 WINTER RESEARCH AND INNOvATION because we have skillsets, capabilities, equipment and infrastructure that they might not have," says Mira. "We are able to leverage all the resources we have at the college." Research and Innovation draws on Georgian's expertise in relevant programs like engineering technology, computer studies, environmental studies, research analyst and business. Thanks to a $2-million grant that Georgian received from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to support smart manufacturing initiatives, Research and Innovation is primed to help local companies bring advanced manufacturing and digital technologies to their operations. "In manufacturing there is a movement called Industry 4.0, which centres around data collection and analytics for predictive maintenance, marketing and a myriad of other applications," says Mira. "It's the idea of companies using some kind of artificial intelligence to increase productivity and efficiency, and to serve their markets better. This funding enables us to help product developers and manufacturers incorporate these Industry 4.0 concepts into their operations." One current project is with Environmental Systems Controls, a Barrie company that manufactures clean rooms and critical environments that are used by pharmaceutic companies, electronics manufacturers, hospitals and more. Their problem is that when something goes wrong in a room (too much particulate in the air, temperature fluctuation, etc.) everything in the room is compromised, and can result in huge losses. The solution Research and Innovation is developing is a user-friendly dashboard that integrates all the sensor readings of each room in one place so customers can monitor, in real time, what is happening in a network of rooms. By seeing all the data at once, customers can better anticipate and rectify problems before they become critical and costly. Research and Innovation projects give Georgian faculty opportunities for professional development and academic engagement, and provide students with solid experience in real-world learning environments, as well as exposure to industry employers, all while enabling local companies to expand their markets and increase competitiveness. It's a win-win-win situation. Learn more at GeorgianCollege.ca/researchinnovation.
