The Georgian College Athletic Department recognized the tremendous achievements of their student-athletes at the 48th Annual Varsity Awards Banquet on April 5. In attendance were nearly 200 student-athletes, coaches and staff, representing the 13 men's and women's varsity sports teams at Georgian. Women's golfers Emilie Tyndall and Addison Wallwin were recognized as the top female athletes of the year for Georgian as co-winners of the Greer Trophy. As a duo, Emilie and Addison won their second straight national team medal, winning the bronze at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships and finishing second at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Championships. They are each now two-time Georgian College female athletes of the year as Emilie previously earned the honour in 2015-16 and Addison in 2016-17. Men's volleyball player Liam Gray earned the Cloutier Cup as Georgian's male athlete of the year after leading his team to a second straight OCAA East Division Championship with a 17-1 record. He was named a CCAA All-Canadian for the second year in a row, is the only Georgian men's volleyball player to have earned All- Canadian honours and is one of only nine OCAA athletes to ever win the award in consecutive seasons. A total of 45 student athletes received an OCAA All- Academic Award for achieving an average of at least 80 per cent or higher while also representing Georgian in their respective sport. A Georgian record, nine student- athletes were named as CCAA Academic All-Canadians for being on the school's dean's list while also being named an all-star in their respective sport. Other major award winners included Addison and men's volleyball player Ryan DeBruyn as winners of the female and male Academic and Athletic Excellence awards respectively, men's rugby player Ryan Connolly and women's volleyball player Sophia Clement, who were named the male and female rookies of the year. Athletic marketing team member Sean McEvoy was presented the McKillican Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Georgian Athletic Department and men's badminton veteran Ethan Zhao was presented the Howard/Belcourt Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship, Dedication, Commitment, Attitude and Leadership. 48TH ANNUAL GEORGIAN COLLEGE VARSITY AWARDS WINNERS Awards winners Ryan Connolly, Sean McEvoy, Addison Wallwin, Emilie Tyndall, Liam Gray, Ryan DeBruyn and Ethan Zhao. 34 GEORGIANVIEW 2018
