NEW DESIGN AND DIGITAL ARTS CENTRE OPENS IN DOWNTOWN BARRIE FIRST LAKEHEAD-GEORGIAN DEGREES BEGIN Approximately 250 Georgian College students are now studying in a vibrant new centre in Barrie's downtown core. Students, staff, government representatives and community supporters celebrated the opening of the Arch and Helen Brown Design and Digital Arts Centre in September. "The centre brings Georgian students and faculty into downtown Barrie for the first time, providing opportunities for work-integrated learning and exciting collaboration with experts in Barrie's creative community," said Georgian College President and CEO MaryLynn West- Moynes. "It's named for Arch and Helen Brown, lifelong Georgian supporters who were avid patrons of our art and design programs, and is a fitting tribute to their legacy." The 17,000-square-foot building at 5 Ross Street will be home to students in all years of Georgian's Digital Photography and Imaging, Digital Video, Graphic Design and Graphic Design Production programs. Following extensive renovations over the summer months, the building was transformed to include high ceilings, multi-purpose open space with lots of light, as well as classrooms, work areas, offices and storage. "Our students will greatly benefit from this new location, and Georgian is grateful to the City of Barrie for supporting this venture," said West-Moynes. "We are proud to be involved with our communities' strategy to invigorate part of Barrie's downtown core. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary and look to the future, we know many new partnerships will be created and successful careers launched from here in the years to come." The first two diploma-degree programs offered jointly by Lakehead University and Georgian College started this fall. The Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) Degree with Electrical Engineering Technology Advanced Diploma is the first engineering degree to be offered in Central Ontario. The second program is the Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science – Environmental Sustainability (Specialization in Ecosystem Management) Degree with Environmental Technician Diploma. Over the next five years, Lakehead and Georgian will launch more than 20 new degree programs and degree transfer pathways. The next two new programs are listed on page 39. 38 GEORGIANVIEW 2017 COLLEGE NEWS
