CAROL ULLIAC Advocate for rural nursing and patient-centered care For more than 32 years, Carol Ulliac put patients at the centre of her clinical nursing career and now, as Dean of Health and Wellness at Portage College in Lac La Biche, Alberta, she pushes the next generation of nurses to do the same. Nursing runs through Carol's family, and the spark was lit at an early age. After graduating from Georgian, she worked in city hospitals until her small-town upbringing led her back to her rural roots. She became a nurse at Lac La Biche's hospital and was part of a team that helped the hospital through its first accreditation. Carol experienced first-hand the unique challenges that come with nursing in a rural community. The lack of resources compared to a city hospital meant nurses dealt with a lot of things urban nurses may not see in their careers, without receiving appropriate recognition. Working hard to address these disparities, she joined the first executive for the Canadian Association for Rural and Remote Nursing. This association advances the unique specialty of rural and remote nursing practice through recognition, research and education, and thereby influences rural and remote health policy. She made the transition to teaching full-time in 2001. In her role as faculty/coordinator in the Practical Nursing program at Portage, Carol led the team that developed its own stand-alone program. Previous to that, the college delivered another institution's program. In her current role, Carol is focused on building team cohesiveness, the capacity for empathy and the acceptance of diversity.
