Working on the project later helped Meher land a full-time position as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist at Canplas in Barrie, where he has already been able to apply what he learned on the project. "I wasn't really familiar with research, so the opportunity to learn new types of software, looking into best practices and doing FEA was definitely a beneficial experience and a great addition to my resumé," says Meher. "Research opportunities like this provide invaluable experience for students," says Greg Twigg, faculty, Engineering and Environmental Technologies and an applied research project lead for CARI. "The projects have to be completed with a high level of quality within a given timeframe. They provide an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom and network with industrial experts." "While the industry partners and instructors have a great deal of experience, students offer a fresh and creative look at solutions that may have been missed," adds Twigg. Chotowetz says that with Georgian's research, he now has the validated data allowing him to go ahead with the product. "I could absolutely see using Georgian again," says Chotowetz. "It eliminates a lot of risk at very little cost. Twenty years ago you could build something, test it in the field and tell a client it's going to work. Today you can't sell a product without an engineer's stamp of approval. I can take Georgian's data, give it to an engineer who then has the information allowing him to stamp our buildings. This service is huge. It gives smaller companies and entrepreneurs the opportunity to test their ideas and see if they will work." TNR Doors – A design that lead to a partnership TNR Industrial Doors Inc., a Barrie-based company, provides a wide range of commercial and industrial roll-up doors. Georgian's research team designed a safety release device for their doors. Nick Marando, Engineering Manager for TNR Industrial Doors Inc. and the project client lead, worked with Georgian's research team on the product design project. "Working on the project was very enjoyable," said Marando. "The students and faculty were very professional at all times and were able to provide great suggestions for a solution." This product design project has led to an applied research partnership between TNR Industrial Doors Inc. and Georgian. Having seen the students' skillsets and Georgian's capabilities, Marando is looking forward to working with the college on more projects. "We have several other design projects we would like to pursue with Georgian. We look forward to an exciting partnership that can help us innovate our products and our manufacturing processes."
