"The marine portion of this college has been here for over 100 years and half the Great Lakes sea captains in Canada have come through this college. It has a huge history," notes Capt. Moore. The centre's navigational bridge simulation system is at the heart of its virtual simulation area, a world- class facility, not only for training international officers in the marine field, but also for modelling and interacting various objects and forces in a virtual world using the laws of physics and mathematics. Our state-of-the-art simulators The Centre for Marine Training and Research possesses one of very few modelling workstations in North America and is capable of creating any area and any ship for installation on the NT Pro Simulator. "We would simulate a lot of cool stuff to learn how to deal with it – like a ship fire with helicopters trying to put it out," said Arnesh Misra, Marine Technology – Navigation graduate, Second Officer, Algoma Central Corporation. "Sometimes it felt like I was being taught how to play video games, but it offered a realistic feel for what's out there and how to meet challenges without losing your cool." VESSEL MODELLING Vessel models can be optimized for rendering in the simulators to produce the highest possible accuracy and fidelity in the industry. Applications of these designing capabilities include: • vessel design • vessel refit and optimization • vessel testing and validation • experimental vessels AREA MODELLING CENTRE The centre can create any harbour, port facility or waterway in the world. This is achieved at the highest technical level available in simulation. Area development can be used for generalized area familiarization, specific advanced or hazardous navigation, emergency ship-handling and route planning. Applications of port and area modelling capabilities include: • port development • port operations and transportation logistics • vessel traffic and manoeuvring optimization • current effects • high resolution bathymetry MARINE TECHNOLOGIES RESEARCH AT GEORGIAN COLLEGE • marine emergency duties • marine technology • port design and operations THE CENTRE FOR MARINE TRAINING AND RESEARCH OFFERS THE FOLLOWING • navigational simulator • engine room simulator • lifeboat simulator • Algoma Marine Emergency Duty Centre • fire training facility • harbour survival craft facility • pool survival craft facility • Drager confined space unit Graduate Arnesh Misra using one of the many simulators at the Centre for Marine Training and Research.
