GEORGIAN CELEBRATES FIRST RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND SCHOLARSHIP DAY G eorgian College celebrated and shared student, faculty and staff research-related projects, papers, posters and innovations at the inaugural Research, Innovation and Scholarship Day, which took place at the Barrie Campus last April. "Research, Innovation and Scholarship Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to share groundbreaking projects by faculty, staff, students and partners in various academic disciplines with the broader Georgian community and public," says Mira Ray, Director, Applied Research, Centre for Applied Research and Innovation. "It's also a great chance to see first-hand the strong talents of students and how a research-intensive curriculum sets a Georgian education apart from other educational institutions." In addition to presentations by faculty, staff and students from a range of academic and non-academic areas, there was an Innov8 Showcase and a creative outdoor industrial design competition with prizes awarded in a variety of categories. There were also workshops, a trade show, information for those looking to start their own business, and a keynote speech by Marc Castel, CEO of Maintenance Assistant, a global enterprise company specializing in providing web solutions. Georgian is currently in the planning stages for next year's event. RESEARCH AT GEORGIAN COLLEGE: COMMITTED TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION R esearch, innovation and scholarship are all part of a signature learning experience at Georgian and there's a new committee at the college playing an instrumental role in educating students about the ways research initiatives can accelerate their success. The committee also promotes various scholarly activities that faculty work on throughout the year, as well as research projects that support the college's business and community partners. Georgian's Research Advisory Council (RAC) helps various academic and non-academic areas synthesize and communicate their research activities to students, faculty researchers, staff, the media and the public. Council members include student researchers, faculty research leads from different academic areas, and various representatives from such areas as: › Advancement and Community Development › Centre for Applied Research and Innovation › Centre for Social Entrepreneurship › Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre › Institutional Research and Organizational Effectiveness and the degree development team › Library and Academic Success › Marketing and Communications › Research Ethics Board › Student Success Services A unique blend of events, workshops and curriculum Learn about Georgian's entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives at GeorgianCollege.ca/about-georgian/ research. EXCLUSIVE ONLINE CONTENT AVAILABLE in these areas provides staff and faculty, students, businesses, and community partners with training, networking, mentoring and funding support to help establish and grow innovative research activities. RAC is reviewing a strategy that will communicate its mandate to both internal and external stakeholders and address questions related to research projects – namely how to communicate with stakeholders, how research at Georgian fits into and improves the curriculum, how a research-intensive curriculum is vital to student success, and how research in non-academic areas benefits the overall student experience.
