O ver 100 eager Simcoe County students from both the public and separate school boards descended on the Barrie Campus last May to learn more about innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in a day-long Generation-Innovation boot camp. The ultimate goal of the Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) boot camp was to inspire students to embrace an entrepreneurial way of thinking. The camp was led by Toronto-based MaRS Discovery District. MaRS brings educators, researchers, social scientists, entrepreneurs and business experts together under one roof. The boot camp included interactive workshops on ideation and rapid prototyping and a panel where local business leaders shared problems they were facing. "Events like these give students the opportunity to solve real business challenges presented by companies in their local community," says Crystal Sarantoulias, Project Manager, Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre. "They can apply skills they've learned in a meaningful way and most importantly, empower students to feel that they too can make an impact on an organization one day by applying the entrepreneurial mindset they are learning through initiatives like ICE." Crystal says that 40 per cent of postsecondary graduates will own their own businesses at some point in the course of their working careers, so it's important to introduce and instill an entrepreneurial mentality at an early age.
