GEORGIAN'S EV CHALLENGE CLUB powers up an electric vehicle from scratch SANDRA GILLAN Kitchen and Bath Design, 2016 For the second year in a row, a Georgian College student has won first prize in the student category of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Design Competition. Sandra Gillan competed for the award against other students in Kitchen and Bath Design programs across Southern Ontario. Georgian was well represented at the event, with another student, Tommy Chin, receiving an honourable mention and 2014 alumna Mary Daney taking home third prize in the Large Kitchen Design category. The college's Kitchen and Bath Design program follows NKBA guidelines. Submissions for this competition are included as a capstone project for the Advanced Kitchen and Bath Design course. All submissions are anonymous and judged by a panel of industry experts. Georgian's EV (electric vehicle) Challenge Club, led by Mechanical Engineering Technology – Automotive Products Design student Ahmad-Hussein Hachem (pictured above), raced the car they built from scratch at the University of Waterloo's Electric Vehicle Challenge last May. "It was an endurance race," says Ahmad-Hussein. "Our car had to do as many laps as possible within one hour, on one battery life. All the vehicles in the race used the same type of battery." The team ended up going 28 laps with a best lap race time of 105.385. The race is a unique opportunity for students to plan, design and build their own electric vehicle. Ahmad- Hussein was excited to lead his team's exhibition run in the competition and is looking forward to next year's race. Georgian's electric vehicle was created by more than 40 students with a core team of about 15 people contributing regularly. They spent hours designing, planning and building the electric vehicle. 25 GEORGIANVIEW 2016 STUDENTS IN ThE NEWS STUDENTS IN ThE NEWS
