6 MEDS AND STCW TRAINING 2017 CENTRE FOR MARINE TRAINING AND RESEARCH marinetraining.ca BASIC SAFETY – MED STCW BS This course includes theory and practical hands-on training in survival, personal safety, social responsibilities and firefighting. Attendees will gain proficiency through practical training exercises which include the use of fire extinguishers, firefighting equipment, and firefighting breathing gear; the use of lifejackets, survival suits and inflatable life rafts. PROFICIENCY IN SURVIVAL CRAFT AND RESCUE BOATS OTHER THAN FAST RESCUE BOATS – MED STCW PSC This course will develop knowledge and skills to safely launch and use survival craft and rescue boats. Training items include: principles of survival, evacuation and helicopter rescue; actions to be taken when aboard a survival craft. Also included are practice drills in launching and recovering lifeboats, launching life rafts and donning personal survival equipment. ADVANCED FIREFIGHTING – MED STCW AFF This course is intended for officers and crew designated to control firefighting operations on large domestic vessels. Advanced firefighting tactics and leadership skills are developed through live firefighting exercises, lectures and hands-on demonstrations by experienced ship's officers and firefighters. At course completion, seafarers will have an understanding of the conduct of firefighting training for crew members; Emergency Response Team leadership; management and control of injured persons; incident recording; crowd management and search and rescue techniques.
