COMMUNITY SAFETY GeorgianCollege.ca/PFPR GeorgianCollege.ca/PSIN PROTECTION, SECURITY AND INVESTIGATION PSIN Students develop knowledge and skills demanded by the rapidly evolving safety and security industry. Areas of study include investigative techniques, defensive skills and use of force theory, security procedures, crisis intervention, emergency management and cyber security. During a common first year with the Police Foundations and Community and Justice Services programs, students are provided with an overall understanding of criminal justice and law enforcement in Canada, and they have the opportunity to transfer between these programs after the first year. Second-year students develop the specialized knowledge and skills demanded by today's security and investigation industry. ONTARIO COLLEGE DIPLOMA 2 years (4 semesters) STARTS SEPTEMBER: Orillia STARTS JANUARY: Orillia Approximate annual fees: $4,224.26 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OSSD or equivalent with • Grade 12 English (C or U) CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates may be employed by: • government organizations • corporate and industrial security agencies • the armed forces • police services • hotels, casinos and retail establishments • graduates may also become self-employed Graduates are eligible to write the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services examinations, which are mandatory for private investigators and security guards in Ontario. Only candidates who pass the examinations are allowed to apply for a private investigator and/or security guard licence. FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS Graduates of PSIN may be granted credit toward degree studies at the following institutions via articulation and transfer agreements: Georgian College (ON), Davenport University (US), Griffith University (Australia), Laurier Brantford (ON), Royal Roads University (BC), University of New Brunswick Saint John (NB) and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (ON). PLEASE NOTE Additional requirements include: • physical ability waiver POLICE FOUNDATIONS PFPR Students participate in both academic and practical courses that develop the knowledge and skills demanded by Canadian police services. A common first year with the Protection, Security and Investigation program and the Community and Justice Services program allows students the opportunity to transfer between programs after the first year of study. During the first year, students focus on gaining an understanding of criminal justice in Canada as well as practising healthy and active lifestyles related to law enforcement. In this program, students focus on forensic crime scene investigation, interview skills, use of force theory and application, police powers and crisis intervention techniques. Physical training and career preparation components of the program are designed to prepare students to meet the specific demands of police recruitment processes and a career in the field.
