ABORIGINAL STUDIES ONTARIO COLLEGE DIPLOMA 2 years (4 semesters) STARTS SEPTEMBER BARRIE APPROX. FIRST YEAR FEES: $4,419.56 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OSSD or equivalent with • Grade 12 English (C or U) 34 GEORGIAN COLLEGE = COMPETITIVE = PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS This program focuses on creating functionality in the Anishnaabemowin language and preparing students to design, develop and implement community language programs in Aboriginal communities and organizations. Students study the language as a whole; including the history, changes and current issues affecting Anishnaabemowin today. Incorporating the Ojibwe circular world view, students learn to speak the language by first learning about their immediate environment, then progressively expanding outward to the community. Structured activities provided throughout the program outside of class give students the opportunity to practice their speaking skills. Career opportunities Graduates are prepared for language-related careers in school boards, communities, government agencies, eduation facilities and more – including: • teacher of Anishnaabemowin as a second language • translator • language consultant • language specialist • storytellers ONTARIO COLLEGE CERTIFICATE 1 year (2 semesters) STARTS SEPTEMBER BARRIE APPROX. FIRST YEAR FEES: $3,893.06 The Shki-Miikan foundation year was developed in partnership with the Anishnabe Education and Training Circle. This certificate is intended to enhance the Aboriginal student's sense of cultural identity; develop a solid academic base; assess education/career options; and develop self-management skills. Cultural teachings and smudging are integrated daily throughout each academic semester in social activities, individual program courses, and Traditional Teacher/ Elder visits.
