Lifelong learning is essential in today's workplace. Employment patterns are changing and work is being re-engineered to accommodate the technology that plays a vital role in most sectors of the economy. "People find that they need to 're-skill and up-skill' more than ever before in order to stay competitive in the ever-changing workplace," said Dr. Ron McDonald, Associate Vice President of the University Partnership Centre and Dean of the School of Design and Visual Art and School of Computer Studies. He cites the futurist Alvin Toffler, who said that, "In the future, illiteracy will not be defined by those who cannot read and write, but by those who cannot learn and relearn." Last year, Georgian had 28,000 Continuing Education registrations from students studying at night or on the weekends in face- to-face or online classrooms. Students took general interest, certificate, diploma and degree programs on a part-time basis at all Stay connected with lifelong learning of Georgian's seven campuses. They were pursuing professional certificates or degrees to increase their current skills in areas such as business practices or taking short courses in technology to improve their computer or social media skills. Others enrolled in cooking or photography for personal interests, or entered new fields to build their entrepreneurial skills and establish small businesses. The average age of people attending college programs is increasing, says McDonald, and more and more people who are working are turning to the colleges to meet their lifelong learning needs. "Now more than ever we see much more movement between the college and the workplace as people demonstrate that lifelong learning is critical to their long-term success."
