For the first time, students at Georgian College's Orillia Campus will have the option of on-site housing. Georgian is working with the private sector to meet the long-acknowledged need for an Orillia residence. Campus Living Centres will build, finance and operate the residence, scheduled to open in fall 2013. Plans call for four buildings with a total of 256 beds. The initial stage will see construction of three buildings, providing housing for 192 students. The Barrie Campus pub, along with The First Class (TFC) café, reopened in September after an extensive renovation. TLC, in its current location since 1997, has been renovated twice to keep up with student enrolment. The 668-square-metre facility now holds up to 600 people, and expects 250,000 customers this school year. Mick Kingston, General Manager of Food and Beverage Operations, said, "Now we are set up to keep pace with the number of students we have on campus. We can provide faster service, meaning students can come in, get their lunch or snack and be sure to get to class on time." The new private meeting and dining rooms will result in increased catering services for meetings, birthdays, anniversaries and other gatherings. Board of Governors Student Representative Shaun McCracken explained that all profits go to student activities run by the Students' Administrative Council (SAC), which operates TFC and TLC. The restaurants also offer 150 year- round student jobs. "This is a result of the dedication of staff and students involved in SAC."
