Entrepreneurship is set to become one of Georgian's signature learning experiences with the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre having opened in May. The college's model revolves around integrating entrepreneurship skills into the context of students' full-time programs. For example, students preparing for service-based careers as massage therapists, graphic design artists or in the skilled trades will learn what they need to start and run their own service-based business. But the Centre will offer more than diploma and graduate certifi cate programs. Alumni and burgeoning entrepreneurs from the community will also be able to enrol in part-time studies designed by the Kauffman Foundation, which is North America's most renowned entrepreneurship education institution. Three FastTrac™ programs are offered – NewVenture, GrowthVenture and TechVenture. Georgian is the fi rst college in Canada to partner with the Kauffman Foundation. "The timing is right to shift one of our primary focuses to entrepreneurship," says Dr. Marie-Noelle Bonicalzi, Dean of the School of Business, who cites Statistics Canada's October 2011 monthly labour force study that reported unemployment rates in the region Georgian serves were among the highest in Canada. Since 1989, 75 per cent of job growth in Canada has been through self-employment. This trend is expected to continue. The Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre was developed through a $1.5-million donation from Henry Bernick, one of Barrie's fi rst land developers. Pow Wow March 9, 2013 Barrie Campus gymnasium.
