Serving 2,700 more students now than when she started and with a 3.1 per cent rise in placements from 2010-2011, Whalen has succeeded in her drive to help make education work. The centre places more than 4,500 co-op students a year with 3,500 employers. Recently the winner of the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education's Albert S. Barber Award, Whalen acknowledges that success is a group effort. "I have an amazing staff with job developers who maintain current employers as well as recruit new contacts locally, provincially, nationally and internationally, student developers who offer students support before, during and after their work terms, and career centre staff who work with alumni,"says Whalen. "We do not have a time line on when services stop for alumni. In fact, many of them come back to hire our students which is a testament to the success of the program and learning cycle." Whalen has also won the Education at Work Ontario (EWO) award.
