grad grapevine Former Georgian Grizzlies women's basketball star Helen LaBine was inducted into the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Hall of Fame in 2013. She played four OCAA seasons in women's basketball, debuting with Durham College in 1982-83. She moved to Georgian College in 1985-86, and set the OCAA Division II record for points in a single season with 182, averaging 18.2 points per game. She also set another OCAA Division II record with 43 points in a single game in 1986-87. LaBine left the OCAA as the all-time leading scorer in Division II with 591 points. She was named Women's Athlete of the Year at Georgian during each of her three seasons with the Grizzlies. "I was honoured to be selected to the OCAA Hall of Fame," said Labine. "To be acknowledged in the company of athletes that played at a national and Olympic stage was humbling." LaBine now works as a nurse practitioner in Timmins, where she lives with her husband John and their son Colton. During a road trip to Philadelphia in 2010, Meg Leslie met an artist who inspired her craft. "I was looking for someone in North America who was doing what Antoni Gaudi did in Barcelona," says the fan of mosaic tiling. She learned her technique from Isaiah Zagar and then headed home to Kitchener to tile anything she could get her hands on – a friend's bathroom, the outside of her house, and this past summer, the letter C for Orillia Streets Alive! In this festival, local individuals and businesses sponsored artists to decorate a letter of the alphabet that the public then voted on. Leslie won second place. Her design is called "100 Crows, but who's counting?" There are 96 small polymer clay crows and four large crows representing her sponsor's family. She also incorporated each family member's hands and a rendition of Lake Simcoe, as the letter will permanently reside on the family's lakefront property. "At Georgian, I learned about strong design and the strength of line and colour. The instructors I had inspired me."
