14 NAVIGATION 2016 MARINE CERTIFICATION AND REGULATORY TRAINING marinetraining@georgiancollege.ca NAVIGATION AUTOMATIC RADAR PLOTTING AIDS (ARPA) This intensive three-day course provides specialized training in the use of ARPA. It is a requirement for any bridge watch- keeping officer navigating a vessel equipped with ARPA radar. ARPA is a SEN 1 and 2 refresher course for applicants who wish to renew their certificate after a five year absence from the marine industry. BRIDGE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (BRM) "Human error" can be a major factor in maritime accidents. This five-day course is aimed at improving safety and efficiency on board as it deals with the development of human resources and managerial skills of Masters, Navigating Officers and Bridge Watch Keepers. The BRM course is highly interactive, involving a number of group discussions and case studies, and role-play exercises using Bridge simulators. Topics include: situational awareness, communication skills, passage planning, bridge organization, leadership and teamwork, stress and fatigue, and relationship with pilots and crew. BRIDGE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – REFRESHER (BRM-R) This three-day course provides refresher training in the principles of Bridge Resource Management (BRM), operation of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) and essential navigation skills to Masters, Chief Mates and Officers in charge of the Navigation watch. This course uses case studies, seminar and simulator exercises to provide refresher training in situational awareness, error chains, communications and Bridge Team – Pilot relationships. The course focuses on recent developments in the BRM field in order to keep the attendees current with accepted BRM practices. BRIDGE WATCH RATING (EXAM PREP) This course is intended for mariners with a minimum of six months deck experience and will prepare them to challenge the TCMSS Bridge Watchman exam. Delivery will be a combination of theory and practical skills, e.g., seaman's obligations, safe working practices, review of general ship knowledge, gyro and magnetic compass, keeping a lookout, detached duties including communication systems and verbal communications, rope work and wire splicing. Other Transport Canada requirements include medical certificate, MED A1, B1, B2, or STCW Basic Safety and STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats, Marine Basic First Aid and an eight-hour steering testimonial.
