The program This program is anchored philosophically in person-centred planning and in promoting the development of natural supports and opportunities for inclusion of people with developmental disabilities. The program will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to help people with developmental disabilities participate in all aspects of life in their communities. Graduate career opportunities Job placement has consistently been a strength of this program. The downsizing of institutions has led graduates to successful employment in community-based agencies. A variety of career opportunities exist including supported independent living counsellors, generic skills instructors, specialized care providers, employment instructors, residential counsellors, job coaches, advocates, mediators, life skills instructors and educational assistants. Admission requirements OSSD or equivalent with • Grade 12 English (C or U) Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older) and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED and equivalency testing. Refer to the Credit Transfer Centre website for details: GeorgianCollege.ca/admissions/credit-transfer/ Field placement requirements Applicants must have an up-to-date immunization record, Standard First Aid and CPR Level C or HCP certification before proceeding on field placement. It is recommended that First Aid training be completed prior to program entry. Criminal record check, including vulnerable sector check, required prior to field placement. Graduation requirements Students are required to complete 2 communications courses • 18 mandatory courses • 3 general education courses to be chosen from the college list • 3 field placements Future study options Graduates of this program may be granted credit toward degree studies at other institutions including Athabasca University, Bishop's University, Davenport University (U.S.A.), Griffith University (Australia), Lakehead University, Laurentian University (Barrie Campus), Laurier Brantford, Nipissing University, Ryerson University, Thompson Rivers University, University of Guelph, University of New Brunswick, Saint John and University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
