27 DESIGN, ARTS AND LANGUAGE OTHER DESIGN, ARTS AND LANGUAGE COURSES GeorgianCollege.ca/PTDESIGNARTS American Sign Language (ASL) Beginner 1 In partnership with Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka, this immersive introductory course focuses on basic vocabulary and an introduction to various aspects of deafness. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, exchange personal information, discuss living situations and gain knowledge of Deaf culture and community. Course text (used in both ASL Beginner 1 and 2 courses) is required. COMU 0071 36 HRS American Sign Language (ASL) Beginner 2 In partnership with Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka, this immersive course builds on skills and knowledge obtained in ASL Beginner 1. Students are further introduced to linguistic and cultural information. Topics include talking about family and activities. Students expand their conversational range from talking about themselves and surroundings to storytelling. Focus includes re-telling stories, role- shift, classifiers and engaging their audience. Students will require the text materials from ASL Beginner 1. COMU 0072 36 HRS Design, Arts and Language courses Spanish for Travellers Practical Spanish vocabulary is the focus of this course. Emphasis is on the functional oral skills required in situations commonly encountered by tourists or business travellers. LANS 0003 20 HRS Spanish for Travellers – Intermediate 1 This course is intended for students with prior knowledge of the Spanish language. More emphasis is placed on developing oral fluency while improving comprehension of the spoken and written language. Stress will be on elementary grammar and topics of conversation. LANS 0005 20 HRS Spanish for Travellers – Intermediate 2 This course is for students who have achieved a functional level in the Spanish language. More emphasis will be placed on developing oral fluency while improving comprehension of the spoken and written language. Stress will be on intermediate grammar and topics of conversation.
