21 GEORGIANVIEW DIGITAL WINTER 2024-25 STUDENT PROFILE STUDENT PROFILE with Schulich Builders Scholarships In a world where the potential of skilled trades is increasingly recognized, one student's journey shines a light on the incredible opportunities available in this vital sector. Meet Andy Jiang, a first- generation Canadian and a passionate advocate for the skilled trades. His story is not just about personal ambition; it reflects a larger movement supported by the Schulich Foundation, which is committed to addressing the growing demand for skilled workers in Ontario. Andy's fascination with skilled trades began in high school, where he eagerly participated in various programs designed to explore different career paths. From Dual Credit courses in Baking and Culinary Arts to co-op placements in construction, Andy was determined to find his niche. It was during a work placement with the Toronto Transit Commission's HVAC department though that he discovered his true calling. The hands-on experience solidified his desire to pursue a career in Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). "I realized how much I enjoyed working with my hands and solving problems," Andy recalls. "It was rewarding to see the immediate impact of my work." In fall 2024, Andy became one of five recipients of the Schulich Foundation's prestigious $40,000 scholarship at Georgian College, designed to support students entering skilled trades programs. This scholarship not only alleviates financial burdens but also serves as a testament to the importance of skilled trades in today's economy. The skilled trades sector is facing a significant workforce shortage, making it an opportune time for young people like Andy to enter the field. With infrastructure development and maintenance at the forefront of societal needs, skilled tradespeople are essential for building and sustaining our communities. As Andy continues his journey through Georgian College's HVAC Technician program, he plans to further his apprenticeship training and ultimately achieve his 313A Red Seal certification. His long-term goal is to establish his own HVAC business, contributing to the industry while fulfilling his entrepreneurial ambitions. Georgian has 10 Schulich Builder Scholarships: five for one-year certificate programs and five for two-year diploma programs, valued at $20,000 for the one-year programs and $40,000 for the two-year programs. These funds help cover tuition, tools and living expenses. On Nov. 8, 2024, Andy had the opportunity to speak with Nav Nanwa of CBC Radio about his experience as a Schulich Builder and what made him pursue an HVAC career. "Skilled trades are the backbone of our society," says Nav Nanwa, host of CBC Radio's interview with Andy. "They provide critical services that keep our world functioning." Skilled trades also offer competitive wages. For students like Andy, pursuing skilled trades is not just about a job but a pathway to financial independence and professional fulfillment. Cool skills for a hot industry: pursuing HVAC dreams
