CONVOCATION 2024 | GeorgianCollege.ca 5
The EAGLE FEATHER
Many Indigenous cultures believe that the eagle is sacred because
of its ability to fly closest to the Creator. It symbolizes respect,
honour, strength, courage and wisdom.
To be gifted an Eagle Feather is the greatest honour, and
requires a commitment to respect and care for all of Creation.
Traditionally, it's taught that the Eagle Feather carries the
prayers of the people to the Creator and thus is included in
many important ceremonies, including the recognition and
honouring of individuals.
Georgian was presented with the Eagle Feather by alumnus
Curtis Copegog, Native Community and Social Development
(now called Indigenous Community and Social Development)
and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention (class of 2012 and
2014) on May 10, 2023.
In recognition of Georgian College's commitment to
Truth and Reconciliation, the Eagle Feather is included
in all convocation ceremonies to honour the strength,
determination and commitment of Georgian's graduates.
Solomon King, Cabinetmaking Techniques
alumnus (class of 2018), designed and created the
display case for Georgian's Eagle Feather.
