Bee hotels and flourishing gardens – right on campus! Over the last few years, Georgian's culinary programs have been cooking up some projects. • Bun on the Run takeout food service: Hospitality students create the food and serve it in reusable containers with bamboo cutlery, reducing single-use plastics. • Garden: We plant a variety of produce that's used in student learning and on-campus dining rooms. Any extra food goes to the Georgian Food Locker for students in need. • Orchard: Pear, cherry and apple trees were planted to lower carbon emissions. • Beehives and bee domiciles: The domicile is a home for native pollinators, while beehives were brought in to produce honey for the college. In all of Georgian's culinary programs, students work on their own sustainability projects, practise their research, innovation and entrepreneurial skills and then apply that learning when they graduate. Experimenting with our microgrid system gives students an opportunity to tackle issues like reducing greenhouse gases through an innovative approach. This technology is more than just for faculty; we want students to explore and be part of real-world scenarios. They have the ability to spark change in their future careers and across an entire industry landscape. Bryan Hunt | Dean, Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation Electric vehicle charging stations – powered by our own solar panels! If you drive by the Barrie Campus, you might notice three large solar panels. We're able to power several electric vehicle charging stations, as well as our Alectra Centre for Research, Innovation and Commercialization with renewable solar energy, stored in our microgrid. Students even have the chance to work with the microgrid to help reduce our carbon footprint! They can track the data, analyze usage and apply what they learn in class to a highly advanced electrical system.
